Chapter 15 - Wyatt's Truth

Jonah looked at Wyatt.
Nobody moved.
Stella felt the entire sidewalk change around them.
"Tell me that's not what it looks like," Rachel said.
Wyatt stared at the photograph.
"It was the night Gabriel died."
Jonah's voice was quiet. "I know."
Wyatt looked up sharply.
"You knew?"
"I knew you were there. Gabriel called me from the garage. He said you had followed him."
"Then why never ask?"
"Because you told me you got there after the crash. I chose to believe you."
Wyatt closed his eyes.
"That was a lie."
Stella stepped back.
Jonah did not.
"Start talking."
Wyatt looked twenty years older.
"Gabriel asked me to follow Dean. He thought Dean was moving counterfeit medication through one of your trucking contracts. We found the garage meeting. Gabriel confronted them before I could stop him."
"You were recording?"
"Yes. The camera was mine."
Jonah's jaw tightened.
"Then Hale attacked Gabriel."
Wyatt nodded. "Nico helped put him in the car. Dean was panicking. I could have stepped out. I could have stopped them."
"Why didn't you?"
Wyatt's eyes filled with shame.
"Because Hale had my daughter."
Stella stared.
"He called me from her school parking lot. Sent a picture of her getting into a friend's mother's car. Said if I moved, she disappeared next."
Jonah said nothing.
"I followed the car from a distance," Wyatt continued. "I got Gabriel out after the crash, but he was already dying. He gave me the drive. Told me not to trust anyone. Not even you."
Jonah flinched as if struck.
"Why?"
"Because he thought someone inside your organization was working with Hale. He was right. Nico. But I didn't know that then."
"So you hid the drive for four years."
"Yes. Dean stole it from my storage unit six months ago. I thought it was gone until we found it in Locker 317."
Jonah turned away.
Wyatt continued, voice breaking. "I have hated myself every day since."
"That doesn't bring him back."
"I know."
Stella watched Jonah's right hand curl into a fist.
This was the moment everyone had been afraid of.
The Mafia boss. The betrayed brother. The armed lieutenant standing six feet away.
Jonah turned back.
"Did you kill Gabriel?"
"No."
"Did you help Hale move his body?"
"No."
"Did you hide evidence from me?"
"Yes."
Jonah stepped close enough that Wyatt could barely breathe.
Then he said, "You're going to tell a prosecutor every word."
Wyatt blinked.
"That's it?"
"No. That's where it starts."
A phone rang.
Not Jonah's.
Not Stella's.
Marin looked down at her burner phone.
A text had arrived from Dean.
