Chapter 6 - Locker 317

Grand Central was nearly empty at three in the morning.
Stella hated the echo of her own footsteps.
Jonah walked beside her while Wyatt stayed ten paces behind, watching every entrance. The brass key felt heavy in Stella's palm.
"If Dean left this with Mrs. Alvarez," she said, "why would he tell her to throw it away?"
"Because people protect what they're told to destroy," Jonah said.
"That's a depressing theory."
"It's an accurate one."
Locker 317 sat at the end of a row near a closed newsstand.
Stella inserted the key.
Jonah caught her wrist before she turned it.
She looked at his hand.
He released her immediately.
"Sorry."
The apology surprised her more than the touch.
Wyatt checked the locker with a small light, then nodded.
Stella opened it.
Inside was a black gym bag.
No ledger.
She unzipped it.
Three passports. Two stacks of cash. A burner phone. A silver watch with a cracked square face.
Jonah went completely still.
He picked up the watch as if it might break in his hand.
"Gabriel," he said.
Stella had never heard his voice sound like that.
Not angry.
Young.
Wyatt looked away.
Beneath the watch was a sealed hospital envelope with STELLA HAYES printed across the front.
Her fingers shook.
Inside were copies of her mother's medical bills, insurance forms, and a life-insurance statement Stella had never seen.
She read the number twice.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
"What?" Wyatt asked.
"My mother had life insurance. Dean told me she didn't. He said she died owing almost ninety thousand."
Stella flipped to the next page.
A payout had been issued three years earlier.
The beneficiary account was not hers.
It belonged to a company called Keller Recovery Holdings.
Stella's lips parted.
"He stole it."
Jonah watched her face.
"He didn't rescue me," she whispered. "He used my own money to pay my rent. To buy groceries. To make me think I owed him."
The entire relationship rearranged itself inside her mind.
Every gift.
Every favor.
Every time Dean had reminded her that nobody else would have helped.
Stella sank onto the bench in front of the lockers.
"Three years," she said. "Three years of my life because he stole one check."
Jonah crouched in front of her.
"No. Because he built a cage and convinced you it was a debt."
Her eyes filled, but she did not cry.
Wyatt pulled a flash drive from the bottom of the bag.
"There's more."
A label was taped across it.
GABRIEL - ORIGINAL.
Jonah stared.
Before anyone could speak, the burner phone inside the bag rang.
Stella jumped.
Jonah answered.
A man's voice came through, calm and familiar.
"Jonah Pierce. Put Stella on the phone."
Stella recognized the voice from Dean's kitchen.
May you like
The man with the black stone ring.
Then he added, "Tell her Detective Victor Hale would like his property back."
