Chapter 12 - Daniel Carter

We found Daniel Carter before sunrise.
Not because Lena told us where he was.
Because my mother did.
She had known for twenty-two years.
A safe house in the Catskills.
No street number. No mailbox. Just a gravel road, pine trees, and a one-story cabin with two cameras hidden in birdhouses.
I walked to the door alone.
A man opened it before I knocked.
He had my eyes.
Older. Tired. Gray beard. Scar across his left cheek.
My father.
For a long moment, neither of us moved.
Then he said my name.
"Naomi."
I slapped him.
Hard.
He accepted it.
"You don't get to say my name like you've been waiting at the airport," I said.
My voice broke anyway.
"I buried you."
"I know."
"I talked to your grave."
"I know."
"You knew where I lived."
He looked down.
"Yes."
I slapped him again.
Then I hugged him so hard I hated myself for needing to.
He held me like a man trying to make up twenty-two years in ten seconds.
It wasn't enough.
It was everything.
Inside, he told us the truth.
Project Harbor began as a private investment pool created by five wealthy partners, including Thomas Sterling and Richard Cole. It became a laundering system when one partner, Victor Dane, used hotel construction contracts to wash criminal money.
My father discovered it.
Thomas Sterling wanted out.
Richard Cole wanted to cooperate.
Eleanor Sterling wanted to protect the company long enough to separate clean assets from dirty ones.
"And the memo?" Adrian asked.
My father looked at him. "Escalation meant offering me federal protection. The language was deliberately vague because Dane had people inside their companies."
"Then why did my father sign it?"
"Because Richard was helping me."
Adrian sat back, stunned.
Vanessa folded her arms. "And my father?"
My father hesitated.
"Thomas was the first to disappear into protection."
Vanessa's face collapsed.
"He's alive too?"
"He was."
Was.
"He died six years ago from pancreatic cancer."
Vanessa turned away before anyone saw her cry.
I looked at my father. "Where does Martin fit?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Martin was my courier. He delivered records to investigators for years. Then twelve months ago, he stopped answering to me."
"Why?"
"Because Victor Dane found him first."
Adrian frowned. "Dane is still alive?"
My father walked to a cabinet and removed a recent photograph.
Victor Dane stood beside Eleanor Sterling at a gala three weeks earlier.
May you like
Except everyone in New York knew him by another name.
Senator Victor Hale.
