Chapter 13 - The Man Everyone Knew

By 9:00 a.m., every television in the state was showing Vanessa's rooftop kick.

By 9:15, Senator Victor Hale was on cable news condemning "violence and entitlement among the wealthy."

Vanessa threw a pillow at the screen.

"He launders millions and I'm the headline."

"You did try to kick a waitress," Adrian said.

She glared at him. "Read the room."

My father spread documents across the cabin table.

Hale had spent two decades converting criminal money into clean political donations, real estate holdings, charitable grants, and consulting fees. Project Harbor was his original machine.

The missing forty-three million Vanessa moved had been a reserve fund Hale still controlled through old foundation accounts.

"So where is it now?" Eleanor asked.

She had arrived with two attorneys and no patience.

Vanessa looked at her grandmother. "Safe."

"Where?"

"Not telling you."

"Vanessa."

"You lied to me about Dad for twelve years. You don't get passwords today."

Eleanor looked older than she had on the rooftop.

"I told you he died because that was what he asked me to tell you."

"And you obeyed?"

"It kept you alive."

Vanessa's anger cracked.

"It kept me angry at a dead man who wasn't dead."

No one had a good answer.

My father pointed to a transfer map. "Hale needs the forty-three million before the end of the week. It's collateral for a private financing deal. Without it, several shell companies default at once."

Adrian leaned forward. "Which exposes beneficial ownership."

"Exactly."

I understood. "So Vanessa didn't just steal his money. She pulled a pin."

Eleanor looked at her granddaughter. "You had no idea."

Vanessa shrugged. "I knew enough to annoy the right people."

My phone vibrated.

A message from Martin.

One photo.

Lena, unconscious in the back seat of a car.

Text beneath it:

ONE HOUR. MIDTOWN FEDERAL COURTHOUSE. BRING VANESSA AND THE TRANSFER CODES.

I looked around the room.

Lena had gone outside ten minutes earlier to check the perimeter.

No one heard anything.

My father went pale.

Then his secure radio crackled.

A male voice said, "Daniel, you always were bad at protecting family."

May you like

Senator Hale.

He had found us.
