Chapter 19 - The Broadcast

We did not run to another secret room.
We were done hiding.
Adrian's plan was simple enough to sound insane.
Make Hale believe we were decoding the ledger live.
Make him come for it.
And make sure the whole country could watch.
Vanessa used the one thing she suddenly had more of than Hale.
Attention.
At 8:00 p.m., she went live from the Sterling Foundation rooftop—the same rooftop where she had tried to kick me less than twenty-four hours earlier.
Millions of people joined within minutes.
She stood under the same string lights in a plain black dress, no jewelry, no smile.
"Yesterday, you watched me assault a woman who did not deserve it," she said. "Her name is Naomi Carter. I was angry, scared, and wrong. There is no excuse."
I watched from behind the camera.
That apology mattered.
Not because it erased anything.
Because she did not try to.
Then she continued.
"What happened next exposed a financial network that has stolen from charities, businesses, and taxpayers for more than twenty years. Tonight, we are releasing the evidence."
Hale called within ninety seconds.
Adrian put him on speaker but not on the livestream.
"Turn it off," Hale said.
Vanessa looked at me.
I shook my head.
She smiled into the phone. "No."
"You have no idea what you're doing."
"I hear that a lot."
"Where is the ledger?"
"Close."
That was the bait.
Federal agents were positioned across the building. This time, the team was selected from outside Hale's known network.
My mother and father were in a secure van decoding the cipher.
Eleanor stood beside me, ready to confess publicly to her role.
At 8:17, the elevator doors opened.
Senator Victor Hale walked out alone.
He wore no disguise.
No panic.
Just a dark suit and the confidence of a man who had spent decades being welcomed into every room.
"End the broadcast," he said.
Vanessa kept facing the camera.
"You're early."
Hale's eyes found me.
"Daniel's daughter."
"Victor Dane," I said.
For the first time, his smile faltered.
Adrian stepped out from behind the bar.
"You're being recorded."
Hale laughed. "By whom? The government? Half the people who trained your government took my money."
Then Eleanor walked forward.
"Not tonight, Victor."
His face turned cold.
"You should have died with your son."
Vanessa inhaled sharply.
The livestream heard it.
So did millions of people.
Hale realized his mistake.
He reached inside his jacket.
I moved.
So did the agents.
May you like
A shot cracked across the rooftop.
And Vanessa fell.
