Chapter 13 - The Man Who Knew Every Door

Graham did not take a flight.

Airport cameras showed him entering the parking garage and changing jackets.

Then he walked out through a service corridor and vanished.

"He knows we're looking," Ruiz said.

Daniel stared at the map spread across the table.

"He also knows every property my family owns."

That included the city house, the lake house, two commercial buildings, and an old warehouse Robert had purchased years earlier.

Police checked all of them.

Nothing.

Emily had a different thought.

"What about places he handled for your father that your family doesn't technically own?"

Daniel looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Storage units. Safe deposit boxes. Offices. Anything he could access without raising suspicion."

Ruiz nodded. "Good question."

They reviewed old legal invoices.

One address appeared repeatedly: 418 Archer Street.

A small office building downtown.

Graham had leased a private file room there for more than a decade.

Police entered with a warrant just before midnight.

The room was empty.

But on the desk sat a laptop, still warm.

Graham had been there recently.

A technician recovered browser history.

He had searched Daniel's home address.

Emily's social media pages.

And Lily's pediatric clinic.

Emily felt sick.

"Why Lily's clinic?"

Ruiz did not answer immediately.

Then an officer called from the hallway.

"Detective, you need to see this."

Inside a locked cabinet were dozens of files.

Each one carried a family name.

Each one contained private information: medical histories, financial disputes, divorce records, secrets clients had trusted Graham to protect.

He had been collecting leverage for years.

Daniel's family had not been his only target.

Then Emily saw a folder labeled CARTER - EMILY.

Her hands went cold.

Inside were printed emails, photographs, and notes about her daily schedule.

One page listed places she went with Lily.

At the bottom, someone had written:

IF DANIEL REFUSES, PRESSURE THROUGH CHILD.

Daniel read it twice.

His face went rigid.

Ruiz immediately placed an officer outside Lily's hospital room.

But Emily kept turning pages.

Near the back was a recent photograph.

It showed Graham standing beside a black SUV.

Next to him was a man Emily recognized.

She whispered, "That's our neighbor."

Daniel looked closer.

"Mark?"

Mark Ellis lived three houses away.

He had waved at them that morning.

He had offered to help Emily after the ambulance came.

And according to the photo, he had known Graham for months.
