Chapter 5 - The Attorney at Midnight

His name was Graham Weller.
For twenty-three years, Daniel had known him as the man who handled every important document in the Carter family.
Graham had attended Daniel's father's funeral. He had toasted Daniel and Emily at their wedding. He had sent Lily a silver bracelet the week she was born.
Now, on hidden video, he was sitting in their dining room after midnight with Vanessa.
Ruiz increased the volume.
Graham's voice was low.
"You said Daniel would sign before the audit."
Vanessa poured herself a glass of wine.
"Emily keeps asking questions."
"Then answer them."
"She doesn't trust me."
Graham leaned back. "That's your problem."
Vanessa stared at him.
"No. It's our problem."
The video ended.
Daniel stood motionless.
Emily said, "What audit?"
He rubbed both hands over his face.
"My father's trust requires an independent audit every five years. The next one is this month."
Ruiz asked, "Did Vanessa have authority over the accounts?"
"Years ago. Not now."
"And Graham?"
"He prepared the reports."
The detective made a note.
Emily looked at Daniel. "How much have you reviewed personally?"
Silence.
That silence answered her.
Daniel had trusted them.
Completely.
By noon, police obtained a warrant for the hidden devices and financial records connected to Vanessa.
At 1:30, Emily's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice whispered, "Mrs. Carter? My name is Rachel Dean. I used to work for Vanessa."
Emily stepped away from Daniel's room.
"How did you get my number?"
"It doesn't matter. You need to listen."
The woman sounded terrified.
"Vanessa isn't just stealing money. She has been preparing to make you look unstable for months."
Emily's grip tightened on the phone.
"What does that mean?"
"Photos. Edited recordings. Notes about your arguments with Daniel. Copies of prescriptions from after Lily was born. She kept saying that if anything happened, she could prove you were an unfit mother."
Emily could barely breathe.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Rachel was silent for a moment.
Then she said, "Because I saw what she did to the last person who threatened to expose her."
Emily leaned against the wall.
"Who?"
May you like
Rachel whispered a name.
"Your father-in-law."
