Chapter 8 - The Key Without a Box

The key was old and scratched, with a strip of faded blue tape wrapped around the head.

Vanessa claimed it belonged to a storage locker.

"Then tell us which one," Ruiz said.

She refused.

Police arrested her on suspicion of evidence tampering and child endangerment while they continued investigating the financial crimes.

Emily thought she would feel relief.

Instead, she felt exposed.

The house no longer felt like home.

Every vent, every shelf, every smoke detector could hide another camera.

Daniel hired a security company to sweep the property.

They found five devices.

One in the kitchen.

One outside Daniel's office.

One in the nursery.

One in the upstairs hallway.

And one inside Emily and Daniel's bedroom.

Emily stood in the doorway while the technician removed it.

"How long has it been active?" she asked.

"Hard to say. Maybe months."

She walked outside and threw up in the garden.

Daniel followed her.

"Em."

"Don't touch me right now."

He stopped.

She pressed both hands to her face.

"Your sister watched us. She watched our daughter sleep. She recorded our bedroom."

"I know."

"No, Daniel. You trusted her with everything. The alarm code. The cameras. The accounts. The house."

His face tightened.

"I know."

"And every time I said she crossed a line, you told me she was just protective of you."

That landed harder than anything else.

He looked away.

"You're right."

Emily had expected an argument.

Instead, he said it again.

"You're right. I kept asking you to tolerate things I should've stopped."

Emily's anger did not disappear.

But it shifted.

That evening, Ruiz called.

The blue key matched a private storage facility downtown.

The locker was rented under a fake company connected to Graham Weller.

Police obtained access.

Inside were boxes of financial files, cloned hard drives, cash, and several sealed envelopes.

But no blue box.

Then an officer noticed a false panel in the back wall.

Behind it sat a small blue steel box.

Inside was Robert Carter's original audit.

And beneath it was a digital recorder.

Ruiz played the first file.

Robert's voice filled the room.

"If Daniel is hearing this, then I failed to stop them in time."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then his father's voice said something that made everyone go still.

"Vanessa is not working alone."
