Chapter 15 - The Story He Planned to Sell

Graham sent a sample video three minutes later.

It was fake.

But it was good.

Emily watched herself in the nursery, exhausted after a sleepless night, lifting Lily from the crib while saying, "Please stop crying."

The clip cut sharply.

Then came another moment from weeks later when Emily dropped a bottle and cursed under her breath.

Then another, when she and Daniel argued quietly in the kitchen.

Edited together, the pieces made her look unstable.

The worst part was the final frame.

It showed Lily crying at the bottom of the stairs.

Emily standing above her.

Vanessa was cropped out.

Emily stared at the screen.

"People would believe this."

Daniel shook his head. "Not after the evidence comes out."

"Evidence takes time. A lie takes five seconds."

Mark agreed.

"That's why Graham collected private footage. He doesn't just hide crimes. He creates alternative stories."

The plan for the warehouse was simple on paper.

Daniel would go in carrying a disabled authentication token.

Federal agents would surround the building.

Ruiz would monitor audio.

Emily hated every part of it.

"He wants you because you're the only person who can move the money. What happens when the token fails?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Then he finds out he lost."

"And what if he has a gun?"

Daniel did not answer.

Emily stood.

"No. You don't get to turn this into some heroic sacrifice because you feel guilty about Vanessa."

He flinched.

She continued.

"Lily needs you alive. I need you alive. Fixing your mistake doesn't mean getting yourself killed."

Daniel took her hands.

"I'm not trying to be a hero. I'm trying to end this."

At 8:57 the next morning, Daniel entered the warehouse.

Graham stood near a metal desk.

No jacket. No tie. No smile.

"Phone," he said.

Daniel placed it on the desk.

"Token."

Daniel held it up.

Graham moved closer.

"Your father made the same mistake you did. He thought truth mattered more than control."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Truth is why you're hiding in a warehouse."

Graham smiled.

Then he pointed toward the ceiling.

Daniel followed his gaze.

A small red light blinked.

A jammer.

Outside, Ruiz's audio feed died.

Mark looked at the silent monitor.

"We've lost him."

Inside, Graham drew a pistol from behind his back.

"Now," he said, "let's try this without an audience."
