Chapter 1 - The Door That Slammed

The dog bit down on the hem of Claire Bennett's dress so hard that the fabric snapped tight against her legs.

"Scout, stop." Claire's voice came out sharper than she meant it to.

The German Shepherd did not stop.

He planted all four paws in the dry dirt and pulled backward, dragging Claire half a step away from the old storage room beside the horse stable. One of her hands flew to the underside of her seven-month belly. The other reached for balance against a sun-bleached fence post.

"Easy. I'm okay. I'm okay."

Scout's eyes never left the half-open wooden door.

Claire followed his stare.

The room beyond the door was black despite the bright October afternoon. She had been inside it dozens of times since moving back to her late grandmother's ranch three weeks earlier. Saddles. Broken tools. Canning jars. A rusted refrigerator that had not worked since the nineties. Nothing worth a dog turning into a statue over.

Scout released her dress.

His head snapped toward the darkness.

Woof. Woof. Woof.

Three deep warning barks struck the empty yard.

Claire's skin tightened.

"Who's in there?"

No answer.

She pulled her black phone from the pocket sewn into her maternity dress. Her thumb hovered over the emergency call button.

Then the door slammed shut.

The bang exploded across the stable yard.

Claire flinched so hard her phone nearly slipped from her hand. Scout lunged in front of her, teeth showing now, body low and ready.

A second later, something scraped inside the room.

Not the wind.

Not a mouse.

Something heavy.

Claire backed away. "Scout. With me."

The dog did not move.

Her phone buzzed.

A text appeared from an unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE SOLD THE RANCH.

Claire stared at it, then at the shut door.

May you like

Another message arrived before she could breathe.

YOUR HUSBAND DIDN'T DIE BY ACCIDENT.
