Chapter 14 - The Red Mare's Stall

The digital files were copies.

Useful, but not enough.

The original ledger contained handwritten approval codes, signatures, and the dates of illegal dumping. Noah believed his father had hidden it shortly before his death.

"Your dad knew?" Claire asked.

Noah nodded. "He helped Voss at first. Then he tried to get out."

Caleb stared at the floor. "That explains the payments."

"Dad kept records as insurance."

"And where is the ledger?"

Noah looked at Claire. "I thought Ruby's stall."

"It burned."

"I know. I saw the smoke from the ridge. That's why I came back tonight."

Claire remembered Noah's letter: do not tell anyone about the red mare's stall.

"Scout found a pouch under the floor. Flash drive and locker key. No ledger."

Noah frowned. "Then Dad moved it."

Claire suddenly remembered something her grandmother used to say.

Ruby hated closed doors.

As a child, Claire thought it was just about the horse. But Grandma Ruth had repeated the phrase whenever family arguments became too quiet.

No closed doors in this house. Secrets rot behind them.

"The stall door," Claire said.

Everyone looked at her.

"Not the floor. The door."

They returned to the ranch before dawn, using back roads.

The burned stall stood black against the first gray light.

The door had survived because it had been removed years earlier and hung as decoration in the loft.

Caleb climbed the ladder and lowered it.

The thick wood felt unusually heavy.

Noah pried off an iron hinge.

Inside the hollow center was a flat metal case.

The original ledger.

Claire exhaled for the first time in minutes.

Then a voice behind them said, "Thank you."

Sheriff Rusk stood in the barn aisle with a shotgun.

Beside him was Deputy Pike.

May you like

Alive.

And smiling.
