Chapter 2 - The Message

Claire read the second text three times.

Her husband, Noah, had been dead for eleven months.

The police had called it a highway accident. Rain. A curve. A guardrail. One crushed pickup truck at 2:17 in the morning. Claire had spent the next week signing forms while people brought casseroles and told her to be strong for the baby she did not yet know she was carrying.

Now an anonymous stranger was telling her the entire story was wrong.

"No," she whispered.

Scout growled at the door.

Claire called 911.

Deputy Mason Cole reached the ranch twelve minutes later with dust rolling behind his cruiser. He was thirty-six, broad-shouldered, careful with his words, and one of the few people in town who had never treated Claire like fragile glass after Noah died.

"Stay behind me," he said.

"I wasn't planning to lead the charge."

Mason almost smiled, but Scout's rigid posture stopped him.

He drew his flashlight and opened the storage room.

The smell hit first: old hay, oil, damp wood.

Nothing moved.

Mason swept the beam over shelves, rusted tools, horse blankets, and a workbench.

"Empty."

Claire frowned. "It wasn't empty."

"I believe you."

Scout pushed past him, nose low. He crossed the room, stopped at a stack of feed sacks, and scratched at the floor.

Mason pulled the sacks aside.

Under them was a rectangular patch of fresh dirt.

Claire's mouth went dry.

"That wasn't there yesterday."

Mason crouched. "You sure?"

"I swept this room yesterday morning."

He used a shovel from the wall. Six inches down, metal struck metal.

They uncovered a narrow steel box.

It had no lock.

Inside were a bloodstained work glove, a burned corner of a driver's license, and a small digital voice recorder.

Claire recognized the glove.

Noah had worn the pair every day on the ranch.

Mason looked at her. "Claire, don't touch anything."

The recorder's red light suddenly blinked on by itself.

A man's voice crackled through the tiny speaker.

May you like

It was Noah.

"If Claire hears this," he said, breathing hard, "then Caleb knows I found the ledger."
