Chapter 13 - Noah's Story

They hit the floor as a second round tore through the wall.

Mason fired toward the tree line, forcing the shooter to retreat. An engine started uphill and vanished into the night.

Noah rolled behind the stone fireplace and pulled a small handgun from his waistband.

Claire stared at it.

"You carry a gun now?"

"A lot changed."

"That's becoming obvious."

Once the immediate danger passed, Noah finally told the story.

He had discovered toxic waste beneath the Voss property after two horses developed unusual symptoms. A private lab confirmed industrial solvents in groundwater samples. Before Noah could report it, the lab technician disappeared and the test results were replaced.

Noah started digging.

He found years of bribes.

He confronted Caleb because one payment trail used Bennett Agricultural Services. Caleb swore he knew nothing. Noah believed him, eventually.

Then Sheriff Rusk stopped Noah one night and quietly said, "Sell the ranch. Walk away with your wife."

Noah refused.

Two days later, his brakes failed.

"The crash wasn't supposed to kill a stranger," Noah said.

Claire stiffened. "A stranger?"

Noah looked down.

A drifter named Miguel Santos had been sleeping in an abandoned shed near the highway. Noah had given him a ride that rainy night. When the truck was forced off the road by another vehicle, Noah was thrown clear. Miguel was trapped inside.

Noah tried to pull him out.

The truck caught fire.

By the time Rusk arrived, Noah understood exactly what had happened.

"Rusk told me Claire would be next if I talked," Noah said. "Then he offered me a way to disappear. He said the burned body could be identified as me."

Claire's face hardened. "And you agreed?"

"I planned to disappear for forty-eight hours, get evidence, then go federal. But Rusk was watching every move. He took my phone. He took my ID. I escaped him three days later. By then the funeral had happened."

"You could have called."

"I tried. Every person I contacted got followed. One vanished."

Claire's voice cracked. "So you chose for me."

Noah looked at her belly again.

"I didn't know."

"I found out six days after your funeral."

He closed his eyes.

Then Mason asked the question that changed the room.

"If Rusk helped fake your death, why is he trying to kill Claire now?"

Noah answered quietly.

"Because he thinks she has the one thing I never found."

"What?"

"The original ledger. Signed by Harlan Voss himself."
