Chapter 1 - The Cry That Saved His Life

"Don't give him that bottle!"

The cabin had been quiet ten minutes earlier. Crystal glasses clinked, someone laughed at a private joke, and Damon had pretended not to notice the stares at his tattooed hands. Now the same strangers watched him as if his little boy were an inconvenience he had personally invented.

The woman in turquoise shouted so sharply that every conversation aboard the private jet stopped.

Damon Vale froze with the nipple an inch from his newborn son's mouth. The baby screamed against his tattooed chest, red-faced and shaking. Damon had survived three motorcycle crashes, a prison riot he hadn't started, and his own father's funeral without crying. Now he could barely hold a bottle steady.

"Excuse me?" he snapped.

The woman stood in the aisle, one hand braced against a cream leather seat. Her dark hair fell across her face. "I said, don't feed him. Please."

Beside Damon, his fiancée, Celeste, tightened her grip on his arm. Her red dress shone beneath the warm cabin lights. "He's hungry. That's what babies do."

"He's not rooting," the stranger said. "Look at his hands. Look at the way he's breathing."

Damon looked down. His six-week-old son, Noah, was fighting for breath between cries. Tiny fingers curled and uncurled against his shirt.

"Who are you?" Damon demanded.

"Maya Reyes. Pediatric nurse. And that bottle smells wrong."

A bearded man in a black suit stood from the rear row. Grant Mercer, Damon's security chief, crossed his arms. "Ma'am, return to your seat."

"Then let the baby's father smell it."

Damon raised the bottle. Beneath the sweet scent of formula lay something bitter, almost metallic.

Celeste reached for it. "Damon, you're upsetting him."

He pulled it away. "Who prepared this?"

"The flight attendant," Celeste said too quickly.

Maya saw the lie flicker across her face. Damon saw it too.

Noah's cries suddenly weakened into a thin, frightening squeak.

Maya moved. "Lay him on the seat. Now."

Damon obeyed before he knew why. Maya checked the baby, called for the flight's medical kit, and instructed Damon to keep Noah's airway clear while she assessed his breathing. She did not promise everything would be fine.

The pilot's voice crackled overhead: "We have a medical diversion request."

Celeste stepped back, holding her phone beneath the table.

Its screen lit up with a message from an unknown number.

Damon read it upside down.

DID HE DRINK IT YET?
