Chapter 16 - The Signature That Was Real

At dawn, Tessa's team opened the storage unit under warrant. They found archived paper records, hard drives, clothing, and a phone sealed inside a lunch cooler. No Hannah. No June.

Hannah’s whispered voice on the recording was steadier than Damon expected. It was the voice she used when a car stalled in bad weather or the kitchen filled with smoke: afraid, yes, but already deciding which problem to solve first. Hearing it made him proud and furious at once.

But the signature was authentic. Hannah had been there, free enough to sign a form, yet apparently unable or unwilling to contact Damon.

"Why would she leave without calling me?" he asked.

Maya took a careful breath. "Maybe she couldn't risk it. Maybe someone was watching."

One recovered voice memo explained more. Hannah spoke in a whisper over the sound of traffic.

"Damon, if you get this, don't come alone. June can identify a man named Cross, but she is terrified of him. I have proof he met Warren after my crash. I am trying to get her to safety before I find you."

A second voice, a little girl's, asked, "Is the nice daddy coming?"

Hannah answered, "I hope so, sweetheart."

Damon listened three times. The word daddy broke something in him he couldn't name. Hannah had been thinking about his safety even while he believed she was dead.

Tessa identified the traffic noise and background public announcements as consistent with a bus station north of Denver. Investigators reviewed available footage through legal channels.

By afternoon, they located a clip showing Hannah holding June's hand near a row of vending machines. Hannah wore a baseball cap low over her face. A man in a gray jacket approached them.

Damon leaned toward the screen. "That's not Warren."

"No," Tessa said. "It's Cross."

In the footage, June retreated behind Hannah. Cross spoke briefly, then showed Hannah something on a phone. She went still.

The recording had no audio.

Cross walked away. Hannah took June in the opposite direction, toward a service corridor. The camera lost them.

Then Tessa received an anonymous message containing a single photograph.
