Chapter 13 - The Garage Nobody Opened

Warren had kept the old family house in the mountains, shuttered and untouched. Damon remembered a locked detached garage, a blue station wagon, and the sound of his mother saying, "If you get scared, find the truth, not the loudest voice."
In the workshop, Damon could still picture his mother bent over the old wagon, holding a flashlight between her teeth while she changed a fuse. She had taught him the difference between a broken machine and a machine someone had deliberately damaged. The distinction suddenly mattered again.
Tessa obtained authorization to search the property while Damon waited outside with Maya. The late-afternoon wind cut through his jacket. He kept his phone in his hand in case the hospital called about Noah.
"You could go back," Maya said.
"And leave you to stand here alone?"
She smiled faintly. "I've survived worse parking lots."
A technician emerged with a small metal box recovered from beneath the station wagon's rear storage compartment. Inside were old photographs, a ledger, and cassette tapes wrapped in waxed paper.
Damon lifted one photograph. His mother stood beside Hannah, who looked much younger than he remembered.
"They knew each other?" he whispered.
Maya looked closer. "Hannah told me an older woman had helped her understand Aster's finances. She never gave a name."
Tessa found a label on one tape: FOR MY SON, WHEN HE'S READY.
A technician digitized it under evidence protocols. Damon's mother's voice filled the small room.
"Damon, sweetheart, if Warren tells you I left because I didn't love you, don't believe him. I left because I was trying to keep you safe. I planned to return."
Damon covered his mouth.
"He has people in hospitals and banks," the voice continued. "I found proof he was taking money meant for families whose children were used in research. If I disappear, the ledger will show where it went."
A pause, then a shaky breath.
"And there's something about your birth he never wanted you to know."
The recording clicked off.
On the reverse of the tape case, someone had written a name: NATHAN CROSS.
