Chapter 14 - The Wrong Father

"My father died when I was eighteen," Damon said, staring at the tape. "He raised me. He taught me to rebuild engines. I'm not letting a piece of plastic take that away."

Noah gave a tiny yawn, then gripped Damon’s finger with surprising force. A newborn knew nothing about inheritances, patents, boardrooms, or false medical forms. Damon wanted to keep those words out of his son’s life for as long as possible. For one minute, he just watched him breathe.

"It doesn't have to," Maya replied. "Biology doesn't erase love."

Tessa reviewed the ledger. Money moved among Aster shell companies, a private adoption agency, and a trust set up in Damon's name when he was born. The documents suggested the family story had been manufactured around a larger fraud.

"We need independent testing before saying anything about parentage," Tessa said. "These papers aren't enough."

Damon nodded, grateful for one person willing to admit uncertainty.

He returned to the hospital. Noah was awake, reaching blindly from his bassinet. Damon sat for an hour with him, humming the song Hannah used to sing off-key. He told Noah about an old blue car and a woman who had loved a child enough to leave him a message.

Maya came in as the baby finally settled.

"I'm scared," Damon admitted.

"Of what?"

"That everything I remember is fake."

"The people who lied are responsible for the lies. The love you felt was still yours."

His phone rang. An unfamiliar voice said, "You found the tapes."

"Who is this?"

"A woman who worked with your mother. My name is Ruth Bell. She lived with me for six months after she fled."

Damon stood. "Is she alive?"

"I don't know. We lost contact years ago. But I know why Hannah went looking for her."

"Tell me."

"Your mother had a second copy of the ledger. It was enough to destroy Cross. She hid it with a child who wouldn't know what it meant until he grew up."

Damon looked at Noah.

May you like

"Which child?" he asked.

Ruth answered, "You. And the hiding place is under the tattoo on your left shoulder."
