Chapter 11 - The Man Who Raised a Lie

Damon didn't speak for so long that Celeste thought the call had dropped.

As a teenager Damon had asked Warren for his mother’s last address. Warren told him the question would only reopen wounds. Damon had accepted the warning for years, as though his grief were a room adults could lock for his own protection. Now he wanted every door opened.

"What do you mean?"

"Your mother and Warren were married before she met your father. He told you he was your uncle because it kept him close without questions."

"That's impossible."

"Ask Tessa to pull the old marriage license."

Damon disconnected. The anger came first, then an ugly sense of recognition. Warren had controlled the family trust, chosen Damon's schools, insisted on hiring Grant after Damon started making serious money. Every protective gesture suddenly cast a shadow.

By morning, Tessa confirmed the marriage record. It proved Warren's history with Damon's mother, not yet why he had lied for decades.

"My mother disappeared when I was nine," Damon said. "Warren told me she abandoned us."

"Did you ever see a letter from her?" Maya asked.

"No."

"Then maybe you heard Warren's version, not hers."

Damon stared through the hospital window at traffic sliding along wet streets. He had built a business out of rebuilding old motorcycles and then selling custom machines to celebrities. He'd made himself loud, successful, impossible to overlook. Somewhere underneath it was the nine-year-old who'd waited on the porch for his mother to come back.

Tessa joined them with a new report. "Your mother filed a complaint against Warren before she vanished. She alleged he was misusing family assets and threatening her. The complaint was withdrawn through her attorney."

"She didn't have an attorney."

"According to the file, she did."

Maya set a hand on Damon's shoulder. "What are you going to do?"

"Find Hannah. Get June out. Then find out what happened to my mother."

Tessa's phone rang. She listened, color draining from her face.

"The Boulder facility is being emptied," she said. "We have an hour before the vehicles leave."

Damon grabbed his jacket.

Then Tessa added, "And one of the passengers on the transfer list is listed as deceased. Hannah Vale."
