Chapter 11 - The Kid in the Hallway

Nolan looked older in an instant.

"Noah. Tell me you didn't destroy that cake."

Noah's chin trembled. "I did."

Camila felt disappointment hit before anger.

She liked Noah. He had helped carry her equipment in that afternoon. He had asked smart questions about pastry school and told her he wanted to become a chef.

"Why?" she asked.

Noah wiped his face. "Bianca paid me."

Nolan closed his eyes.

"How much?"

"Five hundred dollars."

Nolan's voice cracked. "You risked my job for five hundred dollars?"

"No! I didn't know about any of this." Noah pointed at the laptop. "She told me the backup cake was a prank. She said Victoria wanted something dramatic for social media."

Victoria stared at him. "I did not."

"I know that now."

Noah looked at Camila. "She gave me the box and told me to wreck it in the storage room. She wrote the message herself."

"Did she tell you to put my invoice under the box?"

He nodded.

"Why?"

"She said if you found it, you'd blame your brother."

Mateo swore.

Bianca had been building layers of suspicion like a cake.

The pin near Mateo.

The forged invoice.

The destroyed backup.

The threat.

Every piece pushed attention away from her.

Noah reached into his pocket. "There's more."

He handed Camila a key card.

"Bianca dropped this when she gave me the box."

Nolan examined it. "Executive storage."

"What's in there?" Camila asked.

"Archived event files. Vendor contracts. Spare décor."

Daniel suddenly stood. "We don't need to go digging through hotel property without a warrant."

Rafael looked at him. "Sit down."

Daniel sat.

The detectives took the key card and headed upstairs with Nolan.

Noah remained by the door.

Nolan paused before leaving.

"You stay right there."

"Dad - "

"Right there."

The pain in his voice made the room uncomfortable.

Camila knew that pain too.

Her own father had left when she was eleven. Her mother had carried the bakery dream alone until cancer took her at forty-nine. Camila had spent years believing family disappointment meant love was ending.

Sometimes it did.

Sometimes it meant love had collided with truth.

Victoria sat across from Noah. "Why didn't you tell anyone after you realized it wasn't a prank?"

He stared at the floor. "I was scared."

Camila said, "Fear explains silence. It doesn't erase what silence costs."

Noah nodded.

Ten minutes later, Nolan called.

His voice was tight.

"We found a locked file box."

"What's inside?" Rafael asked.

"Contracts. Copies of checks. And photographs."

"What photographs?"

Nolan hesitated.

"Camila, there are pictures of your bakery. Your apartment. Your mother's grave."

Camila stopped breathing.

Then Nolan said the sentence that turned her fear into something else entirely.

"Some of them were taken three years ago."

Bianca had been watching her long before the Salazar birthday party ever existed.
