Chapter 19 - What Survived the Fire

The fire was small.

The damage was not.

By the time hotel staff extinguished the bin, Sofia's purse had melted into a pink-and-black lump.

Camila stood in the courtyard, rain misting her face.

Rafael looked ready to break.

Elena held his arm.

Adrian watched from behind the glass doors with the smug calm of a man who believed he had finally destroyed the worst evidence.

Mateo crouched beside the wet ashes.

"Wait."

He used a pair of kitchen tongs to move a charred strap.

Something metallic clicked against the bottom of the bin.

A tiny memory card adapter.

Camila's heart jumped.

The detective bagged it carefully.

"Heat may have destroyed it."

Mateo shook his head. "Maybe not. MicroSD cards survive more than people think if the plastic around them burns first."

Two hotel IT employees worked with police to inspect the card.

For twenty minutes, no one spoke above a whisper.

Then a file appeared.

AUDIO_0619.

The detective clicked play.

Static filled the speakers.

Then Marisol's voice.

Camila gripped the edge of the desk.

Her mother sounded tired but unmistakably alive.

"I'm recording this because I don't believe Mr. Daniel Salazar understands what his partners are doing."

Daniel's younger voice answered.

"I understand enough."

Marisol: "They're targeting grant recipients who can't fight back."

Daniel: "They're offering buyouts."

Marisol: "After using private financial information from the grant applications to find out who is desperate."

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "Keep your voice down."

Marisol: "You know it's wrong."

Daniel: "I know business is ugly."

Marisol: "No. People make it ugly, then call it business so they can sleep."

Camila closed her eyes.

That sounded exactly like her mother.

The recording continued.

Daniel admitted that Bianca and Adrian were steering vulnerable businesses toward shell companies tied to Salazar Urban Partners. He claimed Rafael knew nothing. He begged Marisol not to go public until he could "fix it internally."

Then came the worst part.

Daniel offered Marisol money for silence.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Marisol laughed.

"You think because I'm sick, I'm for sale."

Daniel: "I think you have a daughter who will inherit medical debt."

Marisol: "Then she'll inherit debt. She will not inherit my shame."

Camila started crying.

Mateo put an arm around her.

On the recording, Daniel lowered his voice.

"If you expose this, you could destroy my family."

Marisol answered, "Then stop doing things your family would be destroyed by."

The file ended.

No one moved.

Rafael looked at Daniel across the room.

"My wife's birthday," he said quietly. "You turned my wife's birthday into a crime scene because you were still hiding from a dead woman."

Daniel began to cry.

"I was going to fix it."

Camila looked at him.

"No. You were going to survive it."

Police led Daniel, Adrian, and Bianca away.

Victoria watched her father disappear through the ballroom doors.

Then she turned to Camila.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

Camila nodded. "Good."

Victoria accepted that.

"But I am sorry."

Camila looked at the ruined flowers, cracked sugar arch, empty tables, and the cake everyone had nearly lost.

Then the hotel lights dimmed.

A backup generator hummed on.

Nolan walked in from the hallway.

"There's one more problem."

Camila almost laughed.

"Of course there is."

He looked toward the lounge full of two hundred waiting guests.

"Mrs. Salazar still hasn't had her birthday celebration."

Elena smiled.

Camila looked at the battered cake.

And for the first time that night, she knew exactly what to do.
