Chapter 14 - The Key Marisol Left Behind

The key was small, brass, and old-fashioned.
Camila recognized it immediately.
It belonged to the metal recipe box her mother used to keep above the refrigerator.
Except that box had disappeared after the funeral.
Camila had searched everywhere.
Inside the envelope, Marisol's letter was short.
Mija,
If you are reading this, then you did the one thing I always knew you would do: you kept going.
Do not let success make you cruel, and do not let cruel people make you small.
The box I left for you is with Elena. Inside are the recipes I never wrote down for the bakery, the first dollar I ever earned decorating a cake, and something I was too afraid to tell you while I was sick.
Trust Mateo. Trust your hands. Trust the people who respect you before they know what you own.
Love, always,
Mom
Camila read the final line twice.
"The box is here?"
Elena nodded. "In my suite upstairs. I planned to give it to you after dinner."
Bianca laughed again from the wall.
Camila turned.
"What is funny?"
Bianca's eyes moved to the key.
"You still don't understand why I kept watching you."
A detective stepped closer. "Ms. Vale, I suggest you stop talking."
"I'm done protecting people who won't protect me."
She looked at Daniel.
He went pale.
"The box doesn't just have recipes."
Elena frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Bianca said, "Marisol kept records."
Camila's stomach tightened.
"Records of what?"
"Cash payments. Grant meetings. Names. Your mother figured out that Rising Table was being used to pressure small businesses long before you did."
Daniel stood. "That's a lie."
Bianca smiled. "Then why did you spend three years looking for the box?"
Rafael looked at his son.
Daniel's silence answered for him.
Camila stepped toward him. "You knew my mother?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't lie to me."
"I met her twice."
"When?"
"During the grant program."
"She was dying."
"I know."
"And you pressured her?"
"No."
Bianca cut in. "He offered her fifty thousand dollars for Luna & Sugar before it was worth half that."
Daniel snapped, "Because the business was drowning in debt!"
Camila felt like she had been slapped.
Her mother had never told her.
Bianca continued. "Marisol refused. Then she started writing down every strange offer, every shell company, every board member who showed up around struggling businesses."
Mateo whispered, "Mom knew."
Camila looked at Elena. "Where is the box?"
"Suite 1802."
Nolan checked his phone.
His face changed.
"What?" Rafael asked.
"The hotel system shows Suite 1802 was opened two minutes ago."
Elena stared at him. "By whom?"
Nolan swallowed.
"Daniel's master guest key."
Everyone turned.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
His key card was gone.
