Chapter 17 - The Screen Above the Mat

The crowd mistook the hospital feed for part of the presentation. Avery knew the room: the blue curtain, the metal bed rail, her brother's folded sweater on the chair.
She grabbed Reed's arm. "Get protection to his floor. Now."
Reed alerted the agents assigned to Daniel. One answered immediately. "We're with him. He's safe. Someone attempted to access the hospital network, but security isolated it."
The screen went black. Rusk remained very still in the viewing gallery.
"Everybody off the mat," Hale ordered. This time the instructor's voice left no room for debate. Ortiz stepped backward, and Cross lowered his hands, bewildered.
Mercer reached for the controls beneath the screen. Reed showed his warrant and directed agents to secure the console. Price tried to slip through a side exit. Two investigators stopped him.
Rusk's attorneys protested loudly. Visitors raised their phones. In the chaos, someone cut the room's main power. The fluorescent lights died, leaving only emergency strips along the floor.
Avery heard a metal object skid across rubber. She turned toward Ortiz, whose silhouette had dropped to one knee.
"Lena?"
"I'm okay," Ortiz said. "Somebody tried to shove me into Cross."
Hale's whistle blasted twice. His trainees, taught for months to follow that signal, formed a clear path to the doors. No stampede. No heroic brawl. Just disciplined people refusing to panic.
The backup power came on. Reed's team found an open equipment cabinet and a portable drive missing from its slot. One security technician lay unconscious but breathing nearby.
Avery knelt to check him. He had a pulse, no obvious neck injury, and a faint chemical smell on his sleeve. A medical team took over.
"Who approached him?" Reed asked.
Ortiz pointed toward the rear hall. "A man in a suit with a silver watch. I saw him leave when the lights went out."
Avery recognized the watch immediately. Keene had worn it at Daniel's memorial service.
Reed's agents rushed after him. Avery stayed with Ortiz until she was safe.
Then Chen approached, face tight. "We got a call from the prosecutor. Mercer has requested a plea meeting. He says he'll identify the chairman's private archive."

"And the price?" Avery asked.
"He wants Daniel declared an unreliable witness before he will talk."
