Chapter 4 - The Locked Motor Pool

The message sent Avery to Motor Pool Four at nine that night. She didn't go alone. Hale drove behind her with his headlights off for the final block.
"Orders said alone," he murmured through her earpiece.
"My brother followed too many orders from strangers," Avery replied.
The maintenance yard smelled of diesel and hot concrete. A single floodlight illuminated a utility truck with the same fleet number listed in Daniel's crash report.
Mercer stood beside it. "You have courage, Captain. I'll give you that."
"Tell me what happened to Daniel."
"He was careless with classified material. His death was an accident."
"And the roster of injured soldiers?"
"Coincidence."
Avery opened the truck door. There was a fresh cut in the seat belt, hidden beneath the buckle. She knew precisely what a severed belt could do in a rollover.
"This vehicle was supposedly scrapped," she said.
Mercer moved closer. "Your judgment is clouded by grief."
"That's the only explanation you have?"
Behind them, an engine started. A forklift rolled from the shadowed loading bay straight toward the truck. Its forks were raised at windshield height.
"Move!" Hale shouted in Avery's ear.
She threw herself through the open door and out the far side as steel punched through glass. The forklift struck the truck hard enough to lift its wheels. Mercer jumped away, cursing.
The driver wore a hood and a dark face covering. He abandoned the machine and ran between storage containers. Avery sprinted after him. Her cut cheek throbbed, but she gained ground before he squeezed through a service gate.
She caught the back of his jacket. Fabric tore. A silver military dog tag bounced against the concrete.
Hale rounded the corner with his flashlight. "Did you get him?"
"No. But I got this."
The tag belonged to Private Aaron Bell, officially absent without leave for four months. Bell's file called him unreliable. Sloane's unofficial medical notes showed a concussion and a fractured hand from hand-to-hand training.
Mercer arrived with two guards. "Captain, you trespassed into a restricted motor pool."
"You invited me."
"Prove it."
Her earpiece crackled. Hale heard a voice through the radio he kept on a separate channel: Ortiz, panicked and breathless.

"Sergeant, they came for my phone. They know I took the picture."
A crash sounded. Then Ortiz screamed, "Don't let them take me downstairs!"
