Chapter 2 - A Camera That Went Dark

"Open the door," Avery said.

Mercer studied her cut cheek. "You came to evaluate a training problem. You are creating one."

"A weapon was hidden in a sparring wrap. That's an assault, not a training problem."

Hale stepped between them. He had trained recruits for twenty-six years, and the lines around his eyes looked cut with a knife. "Sir, the captain is right. We stop until the gear is examined."

Mercer's expression hardened. "Then write it up."

He unlocked the gym and walked out. Briggs followed, clutching the bare wrist he said Avery had injured. A young medic named Private Lena Ortiz slipped toward the cart. Avery saw her palm a small black square from beneath the towels.

In the hallway, Ortiz pressed it into Avery's hand. "He dropped this. I think it came out of the wrap."

The square was dense, smooth, and stamped with a number: C-17. Evidence, if it survived.

"You saw the punch?" Avery asked.

"Everybody did. The camera over the east mat did, too."

Hale was already checking the security monitor. Its screen displayed a frozen image from three minutes before the strike.

"Power failure?" Avery asked.

"Only that camera." Hale lowered his voice. "And only when Briggs stepped in."

Ortiz's confidence broke. "Last month, Specialist Velez got a broken rib from the same guy. The report says she fell from a rope tower. She wasn't even near the tower."

"Will Velez talk?"

"She tried. They transferred her before she could finish her statement."

Avery sealed the metal insert in an unused medical specimen bag. She wrote the time, location, and both their names on the label. She didn't trust the base evidence office yet.

At her car, a folded slip of paper waited beneath the windshield wiper. No envelope. No signature.

STOP ASKING ABOUT THE SEVENTEEN.

Below it was a photograph: a bruised young soldier standing beside a hospital bed, holding a phone with its screen cracked. Across the bottom, someone had written one word.

DECEASED.

Avery turned the photo over. On the back was a date from six months ago and a message that stopped her cold.

YOUR BROTHER WAS NUMBER ONE.
