Chapter 18 - No Deal for the Truth

"Absolutely not," Avery said.

Chen touched her arm. "You don't have to make the deal. Prosecutors do. Our job is to give them enough evidence that they don't need his terms."

Mercer entered a federal interview room with two lawyers and the practiced confidence of a man who had signed other people's futures away for years. He offered access to the private archive if prosecutors agreed not to rely on Daniel's statements.

Reed answered, "We do not bargain away the truthfulness of a witness in advance."

Mercer asked for a break. When he returned, the confidence had faded. Price had begun cooperating, and Keene's financial accounts had been frozen.

"Rusk gave the orders," Mercer finally said. "I made them happen."

"Did you order Daniel's kidnapping?"

"I authorized his detention because Keene called it a security risk. When I realized what they'd done, I should have stopped it."

"But you didn't," Reed said.

Mercer stared at his hands. "No."

He identified a server farm and a paper archive stored under a consultant's name. Warrants went out before noon. Keene was arrested at a private airfield, his passport and a bag full of cash in his briefcase.

At the hospital, Daniel watched the news silently. Avery brought him a sandwich from the cafeteria, the kind he used to eat after long night shifts.

"Do you hate me for not getting out?" he asked.

"Danny, they locked you away."

"I kept thinking I could outsmart them. I kept thinking somebody would come."

Avery sat beside him. "Somebody did. It took too long, and I'm sorry. But you were never forgotten."

He smiled weakly. "You still talk like the bossy kid who ran our baseball games."

"You always cheated at those."

"Only when you were winning."

They laughed for the first time in months.

That afternoon Reed called with news from the private archive. Financial records tied Rusk to illegal payments; messages showed he knew of injuries and consent fraud. The evidence was serious. It wasn't yet a final verdict.

Then a second call came through. Rusk's legal team had filed an emergency statement accusing Avery of fabricating Daniel's identity.

The statement included DNA results claiming that the man in the hospital was not her brother.
