Chapter 12 - The Arrest That Wasn't What It Seemed

Vivian called eleven times before Claire answered.
“I know about Rose,” Claire said. “You don't need to send photographs.”
“Then you know she has a criminal record.”
“Why was she arrested?”
“Ask her.”
Claire did.
Rose said she'd been charged with trespassing fourteen years earlier after refusing to leave Northlight Women's Center without an explanation about her daughter. She spent one night in jail. The charge was dismissed. The picture Vivian sent showed her outside the courthouse on release day.
“I wish I'd broken every window in that place,” Rose said. “But I didn't. I was too scared they'd use it against me.”
Claire listened, her eyes wet. “They've been using it against you anyway.”
Rose agreed to provide a sworn statement. She also made a request.
“I want to come to the gala.”
“No,” I said. “Vivian will recognize you.”
“That's the point.”
Naomi explained the danger of turning a legal case into public theater. We needed authorities, preserved evidence, and witnesses—not just a viral recording. We had begun those steps, but the gala would provide one opportunity we couldn't recreate: a board meeting at which Vivian planned to approve the sale of the remaining foundation properties to Ashford Residential.
Peter Shah showed us the paperwork. If the vote passed, the shelters would lose their leases and the charitable assets would land with Vivian's brother at a fraction of their value.
“We can seek an injunction,” Naomi said. “But we need the original financial schedules.”
Meredith kept those schedules in a portable encrypted drive.
Claire pointed to the red-threaded flash drive from Charles's box. “What about this?”
It contained only a list of filenames and a password hint: THE FIRST NAME THEY TOOK.
“Lily?” I asked.
“No,” Rose said through the phone. “My daughter was born Lily, but that was not the name on the first false death certificate.”
Ruth checked her records. The first child in the scheme had been a boy named Gabriel.
We entered GABRIEL. The drive opened.
A folder appeared on the screen: CHANGES TO ST. CATHERINE'S RECORDS — CURRENT YEAR.
