Chapter 16 - The Black Case Opens

Meredith reached the stage first.

“Due to serious concerns about financial oversight,” she began, “the foundation has accepted a temporary leadership transition.”

My photograph appeared on the screen.

Then another document: the draft evaluation calling me unstable.

Several guests looked toward me. Vivian spread her hands with practiced sorrow.

“I have nothing but love for my daughter-in-law,” she said. “This is a private health matter.”

I walked to the center of the ballroom. My legs felt heavy, but my voice held.

“That's not a real evaluation.”

Meredith spoke into the microphone. “Emma, we can discuss this in a suitable setting.”

“Have you ever met the doctor whose name is on it?”

Meredith's eyes flickered.

Daniel appeared at the ballroom entrance with Naomi. “That document was prepared at my mother's request,” he said, loud enough for the closest tables to hear.

Vivian went rigid.

Claire approached us with the black case. She opened it toward me, intending to show the bracelet and key. Vivian lunged for the case.

The clasp caught on Claire's sleeve. The contents spilled.

Colored beads bounced across marble. A brass key rang against a table leg. The blue hospital bracelet slid between Vivian's shoes.

She dropped to her knees and snatched at it.

I had seen her lie without blinking through pregnancies, funerals, and foundation meetings. Seeing her crawl in front of donors told me more than any confession could.

Daniel looked at the bracelet. “What is going on?”

I turned to him. “You really thought you could do this to me?”

The question was for all of them: Daniel, Meredith, and Vivian. For the men who'd signed things without reading them. For the women who'd called silence loyalty.

Vivian reached for the last bead. “Security. Take her phone.”

I lifted it before anyone could touch me. “I'm done protecting your secrets.”

Naomi gave a small nod from the doorway. The evidence had been received, and Rose was ready.

“It's time,” I said into the phone. “Tell them everything.”

The screen went dark.

Then Rose appeared.

And Daniel whispered her name.
