Chapter 8 - The Doctor's Offer

Ruth answered on speakerphone while Naomi recorded with her permission.
“Ruth,” a man's voice said. “I hear you've had visitors.”
“Who told you?”
“You're putting yourself in danger.”
“So are you, Martin, if you keep lying.”
Bell offered to meet at a diner outside the city. He insisted on speaking with me alone. Naomi said no. We went together and sat in the booth directly behind him, where a mirror gave us a clear view of the entrance.
Bell looked smaller than his photographs. Gray hands, gray suit, nervous eyes.
“You're Emma Sterling,” he said. “Your mother-in-law says you're having a difficult pregnancy.”
“My doctor says I'm healthy. Start with the truth.”
He folded a paper napkin into quarters. “Vivian managed financing. I managed clinical operations. There were adoption placements. Some paperwork was irregular.”
“Rose was told her baby died.”
He closed his eyes. “I didn't personally tell her.”
“What a comfort.”
Naomi set the birth log on the table. Bell stared at it.
“Where did you get that?”
“Did you falsify the death certificate?” Naomi asked.
He looked toward the door. “I signed what the administrator prepared.”
“Who was the administrator?”
“Meredith Price's mother.”
That was the first time I understood how far the scheme reached. Meredith had inherited the secret and then become the lawyer paid to bury it.
Bell whispered, “There's a storage unit. Charles put documents there when he realized the board would never help him.”
“Where?”
Bell slid a folded receipt across the table. “I kept the account active. I wanted insurance.”
His phone buzzed. He read the screen and stood so fast the booth shook.
“Don't call me again.”
“Martin,” Naomi said, “you can still testify.”
He stared at me. “Whatever happens, don't go to the Sterling gala.”
“Why not?”
“Because Vivian intends to make you the reason the records disappear.”
He hurried out the back. Minutes later we discovered the receipt's unit number had been crossed out and replaced by handwriting in red ink.

It was the address of the hospital where I planned to deliver.
