Chapter 15 - The Gala Before the Storm

The Sterling Grand glittered as though the city had no other problems. Gold light spilled from chandeliers. A string quartet played beside a wall of roses. Huge screens displayed photographs of babies the foundation claimed to have helped.

I recognized two clinics on the slideshow that hadn't received their grants.

My pale-blue gown fit more tightly than it had at the last fitting. Claire wore white, and Daniel wore black. We'd chosen nothing symbolic, but the contrast made us look like characters in a play we hadn't agreed to perform.

“Are you sure?” Daniel asked as we stepped out of the car.

“No,” I said. “But I'm here.”

He nodded and didn't try to touch me.

Inside, Vivian greeted donors with perfect teeth and diamond earrings. In her sparkling silver gown, she looked like the kind of woman magazines called generous. When she saw me, her smile faltered for a single beat.

“Emma. I thought you were resting.”

“I wouldn't miss the board's big announcement.”

“Of course not.”

She leaned close enough that only I could hear. “You still have time to save yourself embarrassment.”

“Do you?”

Her fingers tightened around her clutch.

At eight forty, Meredith announced that the board would convene immediately. Daniel and Naomi moved toward the private meeting room with their documents. I remained near the ballroom entrance with Claire, holding the black case.

Then a security guard blocked our path.

“Mrs. Sterling, the chairman requests you step into the service corridor.”

“No, thank you.”

“It's important.”

Claire opened her phone and began recording. “You're asking a pregnant woman to leave a public event without telling her why?”

The guard backed away.

Vivian appeared behind him. “Don't make a spectacle.”

“You scheduled one,” I said.

Onstage, the host tapped his microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, a brief statement regarding the future leadership of the Sterling Foundation.”

Vivian turned toward the spotlight.

Claire whispered, “The case. Now.”

May you like

And as I stepped forward, Meredith emerged from the side door holding a folder bearing my forged signature.
