Chapter 19 - The Seventh Name

The next morning Claire laid the picture on my hospital tray.

“Charles counted six,” she said. “But Gabriel was the first one. Why isn't his bead in the case?”

I examined the photograph. The boy was older than Claire by several years. He stood in front of a school, his hands shoved into his pockets. Someone had written a date on the lower edge: eight years after his supposed death.

Naomi traced the school through Charles's notes. The boy had become a man named Gabriel Shaw. He worked as a mechanic in Oregon and believed he had been placed for adoption after his birth mother surrendered him.

Ruth remembered his case. “He was the one Charles found first. He refused to be publicly identified. Charles gave him the original bead and promised not to contact him again.”

So six beads did not mean six children. Six meant six unresolved cases, and the first known child had chosen his own privacy.

“That makes sense,” Claire said. “He should get to choose.”

We didn't call Gabriel. Naomi sent a discreet inquiry through a qualified advocate, making clear he owed us nothing.

The investigation widened anyway. Former staff members came forward after the gala footage circulated. Two families requested records reviews. A retired accountant produced correspondence concerning the property transfers. Martin Bell, faced with the documents, retained counsel and began cooperating with investigators.

Vivian sent Daniel a message: YOUR WIFE HAS DESTROYED OUR FAMILY.

He showed it to me and typed back while I watched: OUR FAMILY WAS HURT BY WHAT YOU DID. I WILL NOT COVER IT UP.

It wasn't a grand speech. It was a sentence that should have been said years before.

I told him I would need time before deciding what happened to our marriage. He said he understood and returned to the chair by the window.

That evening my contractions became regular again. Dr. Ortiz explained what to expect and called the neonatal team in case our son needed help after delivery.

Daniel held my hand only after I asked.

As the next contraction rose, my phone flashed with an incoming message from an unknown number.
