Chapter 11 - The Name in the Ledger

Three federal agents raised their weapons.
“Hands!” Mara shouted.
Dante froze.
Adrian stepped between the barrels and his security chief.
“Slowly,” Adrian said. “Show them.”
Dante removed his hand from his jacket holding a key card, not a gun.
He placed it on the floor.
Mara cuffed him anyway.
Elena watched Adrian’s face. No panic. No denial. Just calculation.
“Explain the payments,” Mara said.
Dante looked at the laptop. “How much?”
“Four transfers. Total eighty thousand.”
He exhaled. “Those are real.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Dante continued. “Three years ago, my sister needed experimental cancer treatment. Victor Moretti offered money.”
“And what did he want?”
“Information about Adrian’s routes.”
Elena felt the room sharpen.
“Did you give it to him?” Mara asked.
“No. I gave him fake schedules for six months and used the money for my sister. Then I told Adrian.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“He did,” Adrian said.
“You kept him as security chief?”
“He confessed before I discovered it.”
“That does not make the transfers disappear.”
“No. It makes the story more complicated.”
Dante looked at Elena. “Victor never knew Adrian knew.”
Elena understood. “So my father still thought you could be bought.”
“Exactly.”
Mara was not satisfied, but she uncuffed him after Adrian produced archived internal reports documenting the incident.
Then Dante said something none of them expected.
“Victor contacted me yesterday.”
Adrian turned. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the message came during the ceremony and said he wanted to make another deal after midnight. I thought it was desperation.”
“What did he ask?” Elena said.
Dante’s expression darkened.
“He wanted the security room empty at twelve fifteen.”
The wedding-night plan.
“Did you answer?” Mara asked.
“No.”
“Show me the message.”
Dante opened an encrypted archive on his phone.
The message was there.
So was one sent ten minutes later from a different number.
YOU DON’T NEED TO AGREE. THE BRIDE WILL DO IT FOR US.
Elena stared at the words.
“I never had access to the security room.”
Adrian looked toward the floor plan.
“You did once you married me.”
A terrible thought settled over them.
The marriage had not merely been cover.
May you like
It had been the key.
And someone believed Elena had already unlocked the door.
