Chapter 9 - The Room Beneath the Warehouse

The old Moretti warehouse had been abandoned for eleven years.
Officially.
Unofficially, the power bill had never stopped.
Mara obtained an emergency warrant by midafternoon. Federal agents entered first. Adrian’s security team remained outside the legal perimeter, which irritated him but impressed Elena.
“You actually follow rules sometimes,” she said.
“When breaking them would ruin your evidence.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No. But it counts today.”
She almost smiled.
The brass key opened a steel door hidden behind a false electrical panel.
Below it, concrete stairs descended into a climate-controlled records room.
Shelves filled the walls.
Paper ledgers.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Burner phones labeled by date.
Mara stared. “Nobody touch anything.”
Elena stepped into the doorway and felt her childhood rearrange itself.
Her father had brought her to this warehouse when she was ten. He told her the basement was flooded. He had made her swear never to go near the west wall.
A life built around locked doors.
One agent opened a cabinet after photographing it.
Inside were folders labeled with names.
KANE.
BELL.
VALE.
MORETTI, ELENA.
Her stomach dropped.
“Why is there a file on me?”
Mara wore gloves as she lifted it out.
Inside were school records, medical records, photographs, copies of her passport, and a typed timeline of her relationships.
Adrian’s voice went quiet. “Victor was tracking you.”
Elena turned a page.
At the bottom was a photograph of her leaving the domestic violence nonprofit six months earlier.
They had known.
They had always known.
Then Mara found an envelope marked WEDDING NIGHT.
Inside was a floor plan of Vale House.
Red circles marked three entrances, Adrian’s office, the master bedroom, and the security room.
Attached was a handwritten note.
ONCE ELENA IS INSIDE, BELL MOVES. KANE GETS THE ROUTES. VICTOR GETS THE DEBT CLEARED.
Elena felt cold.
“They were going to use me to get into your house.”
Adrian read the final line.
BRIDE REMAINS EXPENDABLE.
His expression became terrifyingly calm.
Mara turned another sheet over.
A photograph fell onto the table.
It showed Adrian entering a restaurant three weeks earlier.
A rifle scope crosshair had been drawn over his chest.
On the back, one date was written.
