Chapter 19 - What Freedom Costs

Three weeks later, Chicago woke to arrests.
Alderman Thomas Bell was charged with bribery, conspiracy, obstruction, and attempted murder-related offenses tied to the wedding plot. Marcus Kane faced federal conspiracy charges. Julian Vale entered negotiations through his attorney. Victor Moretti remained detained after prosecutors introduced Elena’s photographs, recordings, financial documents, and testimony.
The Moretti debt was frozen by court order while investigators separated legitimate company obligations from fraudulent transfers.
Adrian could have seized what remained.
He did not.
Instead, he signed control of Moretti Freight into an independent trust managed by the workers and a court-approved administrator until the case ended.
Elena read the papers twice.
“You’re walking away from twelve million dollars.”
“No. I’m walking away from using you to collect it.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
They stood in the rebuilt Vale House library. Repairs had started, but one scorched beam remained visible near the ceiling.
Adrian intended to leave it.
“A reminder?” Elena asked.
“Of what survives.”
She looked at him. “That was almost poetic.”
“Don’t tell anyone.”
She smiled.
Then she set another folder on the table.
Annulment papers.
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“I told you I’d sign.”
“I know.”
He opened the folder.
The signature line for Elena was blank.
He looked up.
“I met with the lawyer,” she said. “I asked what happens if I don’t want an annulment.”
Adrian became very still.
“Elena.”
“I am not saying everything is magically fine. I still wake up afraid. I still hate closed doors sometimes. I still don’t know how to be married to someone I barely knew when I married him.”
“I don’t want gratitude mistaken for love.”
“Good.”
“And I don’t want you staying because you feel safe here.”
“Also good.”
He frowned. “You’re making this difficult.”
“I’m making it honest.”
She took a breath.
“I want my own apartment for a while.”
His face softened. “Done.”
“I want therapy.”
“Done.”
“I want to work with the attorneys rebuilding Moretti Freight.”
“Done.”
“And I want to date my husband.”
Adrian blinked.
Elena smiled for real.
“Coffee. Dinner. Maybe one day you tell me something about yourself that isn’t classified.”
He closed the annulment folder.
“I can do coffee.”
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Mara.
Victor had requested a private meeting with Elena.

He claimed he had one last piece of evidence.
Evidence that could clear Adrian’s father of the warehouse death.
