Chapter 7 - A Marriage Built as a Trap

By sunrise, Vale House had become a command center.
Elena sat at the long kitchen island with coffee she had forgotten to drink. Nico slept upstairs under guard. Mara had taken statements and left two agents outside.
Adrian placed three folders on the counter.
“What are those?” Elena asked.
“Everything I have on Victor, Kane, and Bell.”
“You’re giving me your files?”
“You already risked your life collecting half the story. You should know the other half.”
That answer bothered her in a way she could not explain.
She had expected ownership from him. Orders. Threats. Maybe polished cruelty.
Instead, he kept placing choices in front of her.
The first folder showed land purchases around five Vale warehouses. The buyers were shell corporations tied to Marcus Kane. The second showed permits blocked by Alderman Bell whenever Adrian refused to sell.
The third made Elena stop breathing.
It contained the original Moretti debt agreement.
Twelve million dollars.
Except Victor’s signature appeared beside a clause authorizing repayment through assets, equity, or a structured sale.
There was no marriage requirement.
Elena looked at Adrian. “You signed this?”
“Yes.”
“Then my father came back with a marriage proposal?”
“Three weeks later.”
“And you accepted?”
Adrian did not hide from the question. “Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor threatened to shut Moretti Freight, blame me publicly, and dump the pension obligations into bankruptcy. Three hundred workers would have lost everything. He said a marriage would stabilize both companies and keep the business operating.”
“You could have exposed him.”
“I should have.”
The admission surprised her more than an excuse would have.
He continued. “I believed you knew the terms and agreed because the company mattered to you.”
Elena laughed once, without humor. “He told me you would destroy Nico if I said no.”
Adrian’s face hardened. “I never threatened your brother.”
“I know that now.”
Silence sat between them.
Then Elena opened the last page in the folder.
A photograph had been clipped to it.
Her wedding rehearsal. Victor speaking with Alderman Bell near the service entrance.
Behind them stood a man Elena recognized instantly.
Her uncle Raffaele.
The man who had held her arms while Victor hit her two nights before the wedding.
Her coffee cup slipped from her fingers.
Adrian caught it before it shattered.
Elena pointed at the photograph.
“That man didn’t just work for my father.”
“What did he do?”
May you like
Her face went white.
“He was the one who told Victor where to hit me so the dress would hide it.”
