Chapter 13 - A Lie Designed to Hurt

"She was watching Eli from the beginning," Daniel said.
Malik held up one finger. "Or somebody used Nora's credentials. That's still under investigation."
The distinction mattered. Daniel knew it mattered. It didn't stop him from imagining an unfamiliar face above his newborn son's bassinet.
The police arranged a voluntary DNA comparison, not because they believed Eli had been switched, but because the planted video had shaken the family and they wanted to establish a fact nobody could distort. Daniel hated the swab in Eli's mouth. Eli hated it more, spit it out, and demanded a cookie as payment.
The results were definitive: Daniel and Claire were Eli's biological parents.
Claire cried in the parking lot, hard and angrily. "They tried to make me doubt my own child."
"They didn't succeed," Daniel said.
"For a second they did. I looked at him and wondered. One second. That's what I can't forgive."
He held her while cars passed, while Eli slept against his shoulder, while ordinary people walked past carrying groceries and paperwork. He wanted that kind of ordinary so much it hurt.
Later, Malik showed them a forensic report. The SUBSTITUTE video was a fabrication assembled from two unrelated recordings. The hospital scene came from a real maintenance-camera archive; Eli's name had been added afterward. Investigators traced the altered file to a server used by a media consultant on Mason Bell's payroll.
"He wanted us fighting," Claire said.
"And looking in the wrong direction," Malik replied.
The police had also found a recent insurance payment linked to the exploded minivan. The registered beneficiary was a shell company with ties to Mason's office. It wasn't enough to charge Mason for everything, but the net was tightening.
That night, Daniel managed to make Eli laugh by balancing a clean sock on his head. Claire filmed them. For thirteen glorious seconds, fear didn't belong in the room.

Then the recording stopped because a stranger called Claire's phone.
"If you want the real Nora," the voice said, "come to the pediatric wing. Your son already has an appointment."
