Chapter 18 - The Son Who Returned

The man was nineteen, tall and anxious, with a faded scar above his left eyebrow. He called himself Sam Ellis. Nora had seen his face through the hospital door and walked toward him before the officer could check identification.
A security camera caught them leaving in a taxi. Police traced it to a neighborhood church, where the cab driver reported dropping them near a side entrance. Inside, they found Nora alone, sitting beneath a stained-glass window with her face in her hands.
"Was it Samuel?" Claire asked after the doctors cleared her.
"He knew things nobody else knew. Our old dog. The song I sang when he couldn't sleep. But I hadn't seen him since he was little." Nora's voice faded. "He asked me to stop testifying. Said Mason had paid for his schooling. Said if I took the deal, we could finally be a family."
"And you refused?" Malik asked.
"I told him I loved him. I told him I wouldn't lie. He looked like I'd hit him. Then he ran."
Sam had been raised under a different surname by caretakers linked to Mason's network. He had lived comfortably enough, but his history had been stitched together out of half-truths. Learning what happened to him would require patience, records, and more care than the case had yet shown.
That evening, Daniel returned home with Claire and Eli under police protection. The gray couch smelled faintly of detergent. Toys occupied the same ridiculous places they always did. Claire set a glass of water beside the books on the coffee table and leaned against the mantel. For the first time in weeks, she laughed at something unimportant: Eli had stuck a cracker to Daniel's shoulder.
"You're a walking snack plate," she told him.
"It's an honor."
Then Daniel noticed an envelope slipped beneath the front door. No stamp. No return address.

Inside was a photo of Sam and Nora entering the church. On the back, in block letters, someone had written:
TELL THE JURY WHAT BEN REALLY DID.
