Chapter 8 - The Door With No Number

Malik wanted Claire and Daniel to stay put. Claire wanted to find Nora. Daniel wanted his son somewhere no one knew his name. None of those wishes fit together.

That afternoon an anonymous courier left a storage-unit receipt at the police station. On it someone had circled Unit 214 at a facility near the river. A handwritten message ran beneath the number: ASK WHAT HAPPENED TO BUILDING FOUR.

Malik secured a warrant and took a team. Daniel and Claire watched from a car across the street while Eli sat in a child seat, chewing a cracker with grave concentration.

"We shouldn't be here," Daniel muttered.

"I know."

"And yet we are."

Claire caught his hand. "I didn't want another secret between us."

Inside Unit 214, the police found construction helmets, a crushed hard hat with BEN printed on the rim, and file boxes containing photographs of the collapse. The official report had listed two dead workers. The photos showed at least six lunch bags laid beside a temporary shelter. Names were written on the bottoms. One belonged to a teenage intern: Nora Ellis.

"She was there," Claire said. "She told me she was working in the office that summer."

A detective carried out a sealed plastic bin marked with orange tape. The moment its lid opened, everyone's face changed. Daniel couldn't see the contents, but he heard Malik say, "Call the state investigators. Now."

A van pulled into the facility from the wrong direction. Its windows were tinted dark. A man in a work jacket stepped out, saw the officers, and ran. Two officers sprinted after him. Tires squealed.

Daniel ducked instinctively, putting himself between the street and Eli. The toddler dropped his cracker.

"Daddy," Eli said, pointing past Daniel's shoulder. "Blue lady."

Across the street, a woman in a faded blue jacket stood under a bus-stop shelter. She lifted two fingers to her wrist, showing a frayed blue bracelet.

Then she pointed straight at Claire and mouthed, "RUN."
