Chapter 16 - The Voice Beneath the Floor

The knocking came from a storm shelter beneath the trailer. Officers opened its hatch and found a woman seated beside a battery lantern, thin but alert, her wrists scraped raw. A frayed blue bracelet circled one arm.
Nora Ellis was alive.
At the hospital she told Malik that someone had followed her for years. After the collapse, Mason's associates threatened her and Samuel. Ben helped them disappear under assumed names. But Samuel had grown sick. Nora brought him back for treatment, and a hospital employee passed information to Vale.
"Where is Samuel now?" Claire asked during a protected interview.
Nora looked away. "I don't know. He vanished from a foster placement when he was three. I was in the hospital after an accident. They told me he was moved somewhere safe. No one would tell me where."
Claire reached across the table, but Nora recoiled. "I didn't put that camera in your house," Nora said. "I saw someone at the yard sale and tried to stop him. I called because I thought they were coming for your boy instead of mine."
"The woman in the yellow coat?" Daniel asked.
"She works for Vale. I followed her. When I saw the owl, I knew she was setting you up. I should've called the police sooner."
Nora admitted she'd entered hospital records years earlier under a stolen account while searching for Samuel. That access had made it easy for Vale's people to frame her as the nursery intruder. She had also left the blue-bracelet warning at the storage facility. Then men had grabbed her outside the diner and locked her beneath the floor.
"Why Eli?" Daniel asked.
"Because Ben tried to protect Samuel. Because Mason thinks Ben passed something to Claire. He thinks if you're frightened enough you'll produce it."
"We've given the police everything," Claire said.
Nora's face tightened. "Not the second key."

Claire's hand moved to the brass heart in her pocket.
Nora whispered, "That key doesn't open a box. It opens the place where they buried the truth."
