Chapter 17 - Building Four

The heart-shaped key fit a small service access door beneath the foundation of Building Four, a fenced industrial structure abandoned after the fatal collapse. Its shape had fooled Claire for years; the decorative heart was a manufacturer's mark, not a sentimental message.

Malik obtained a search warrant. Engineers inspected the remaining walls before anyone entered. No hero rushed into a crumbling building, no one kicked open a dangerous door. They waited while specialists supported the entrance, and Daniel found that waiting could be its own kind of violence.

Behind the door lay an archive room sealed from the collapse. Metal shelves held inspection ledgers, samples of concrete cores, and signed testimony that contradicted the official accident report. There were records of workers ordered inside after safety warnings, along with evidence that managers had erased their names from the daily roster.

Ben had been collecting everything. His notes named Mason Bell as the person who ordered the cover-up, but proving murder would require more than handwriting. Investigators carefully logged each item. The scene became a long chain of evidence labels and camera flashes.

Claire stood behind the perimeter tape with Daniel. "Dad could've just gone to the police."

"Maybe he didn't know whom to trust," Daniel said.

"Maybe he was proud and stubborn and thought he could handle it himself. Both things can be true."

Malik emerged carrying a sealed envelope. "There's a statement from Nora, signed back then. Also a recording that appears to capture a confrontation between Ben and Mason. We'll authenticate both."

A news helicopter circled overhead. Mason's name began flashing across live broadcasts. By evening, regulators had suspended permits tied to his oldest companies, and prosecutors announced an expanding criminal inquiry.

Daniel let himself believe the worst was over.

Then Malik received a call from the officer guarding Nora. The detective's expression hardened.

"She's gone," he said. "And the nurse says she left with a man claiming to be her son."
