Chapter 6 - The Name on the Tape

Ben was Claire's father. Daniel knew his middle name and the way he drank coffee, knew the expensive fountain pen Claire kept because it had once belonged to him. He did not know a stranger might have killed him.
"Dad had a heart attack," Claire said. "There was an autopsy."
Malik didn't argue. "An allegation on a cassette isn't proof. We'll have it examined and see what it contains."
That night, they slept badly in a safe house outside town. Eli took up most of the bed, as toddlers do. Every time the heating system clicked, Daniel jerked awake. Around three, he found Claire in the kitchen eating cold cereal from the box.
"I hated him sometimes," she admitted. "Dad, I mean. He lied about everything. Where he went, who called, why he missed my graduation. He acted like questions were insults. When he died, I was relieved. And then I hated myself for feeling relieved."
Daniel poured two glasses of water. "You can love somebody and be angry at them. Both things fit."
"How are you still nice to me?"
"I'm not always nice. Ask the guy I nearly punched at the gas station."
She smiled, and then the smile fell away. "I used to have a friend named Nora. Her dad worked for Mason. She disappeared the summer Ben died."
"Disappeared how?"
"Her family said she moved west. She never called again. I told myself she wanted a clean start."
The next morning, Malik played them the restored cassette in a small interview room. Ben's voice crackled through the speaker: "If you're hearing this, I finally told the truth too late. The project wasn't just bad concrete. There were people inside when Building Four fell. Owen saw the inspection records. Mason paid to make them vanish."
A chair scraped on the recording. Ben shouted a name, and the tape cut to static.
Malik stopped playback.

"What name?" Daniel demanded.
"Nora," Claire answered. "He said Nora."
