Chapter 15 - The Principal Comes Back

Officer Bennett arrived before anyone opened the door.
Hargrove surrendered without resistance.
At the station, he asked for protection.
"From Mercer?" Ruiz said.
Hargrove shook his head.
"From Rusk. Gordon doesn't do violence himself. He has people for that."
That distinction did not impress anyone.
Hargrove admitted hiding complaints, altering discipline records, and helping move booster money through school accounts.
He also admitted helping cover up Tyler's injury.
"Why abduct Seth?" Ruiz asked.
Hargrove's face tightened.
"Because Gordon believed Seth had the ledger."
"Did he?"
"No. Ryan hid it."
That surprised Maya.
Ryan had taken the ledger months earlier after overhearing his father and Hargrove arguing. He used pieces of information from it to control teammates and adults around him.
The bully had learned blackmail from the people raising him.
But Hargrove's most important confession concerned Gabriel.
He admitted that after Gabriel left the fieldhouse, Gordon told Rusk to "stop him from reaching the state office in the morning."
"Did Gordon order murder?" Ruiz asked.
"He didn't say kill him."
"What did he say?"
Hargrove looked down.
"Make sure his car doesn't get him there."
Maya's nails dug into her palm.
That was enough for her.
Legally, prosecutors wanted more.
They got it from Rusk.
Facing kidnapping charges, corruption charges, and a reopened homicide investigation, Clay Rusk began bargaining.
He admitted cutting Gabriel's brake line in the fieldhouse parking lot.
He claimed he only intended to scare him by causing the brakes to fail at low speed.
Nobody believed that either.
Rusk said Gordon paid Pike to clean up the report and paid Hargrove to bury the construction records.
By Friday morning, officers arrived at Gordon Mercer's home with an arrest warrant.
News helicopters circled above the neighborhood.
Maya watched from her living room.
Gordon walked out in handcuffs wearing the same controlled expression he had worn in Principal Hargrove's office.
For one second, he looked directly into a news camera.
Maya felt nothing.
No victory.
No joy.
Just a long exhale she had been holding for seven years without knowing it.
Then the reporter said Ryan Mercer was missing.
Maya's phone buzzed.
A message from Ryan appeared.
YOU RUINED EVERYTHING.
A second line followed.
