Chapter 8 - The Story They Buried

The recording did not prove murder.

It proved pressure, bribery, and fear.

But the inspection photos were worse.

Gabriel had documented support beams that did not meet code, fireproofing that had never been installed, and invoices charging the school district for materials that were never delivered.

The final page in the box was a handwritten note.

IF THEY FORCE THIS THROUGH, SOMEONE WILL GET HURT.

Maya read the line until the words blurred.

Her father had not been paranoid.

He had been right.

Detectives reopened his crash file.

The original report said Gabriel lost control in rain and struck a barrier. But weather records showed no rain that night.

Worse, the mechanic who inspected the vehicle had noted a damaged brake line before the report was revised.

"Revised by who?" Elena asked.

Officer Bennett did not answer immediately.

That frightened Maya more than any answer could.

"A deputy who's retired now," Bennett finally said. "His name is Alan Pike."

Luis pulled out his phone. "Let me guess. Mercer donated to his campaign."

"He wasn't elected."

"Then his church. His golf club. His dog's birthday. Pick one."

By noon, local reporters were outside the district office.

The gym video had already created public pressure. Now rumors of a corruption investigation spread fast.

Principal Hargrove announced that Maya's suspension was "under review."

Maya laughed when she read it.

"Under review? They had the video yesterday."

Elena took the phone from her. "They aren't deciding what happened. They're deciding what they can admit."

That evening, the school board scheduled an emergency meeting.

Students planned to attend.

Parents planned to attend.

Gordon Mercer hired an attorney.

Coach Danner agreed to give a formal statement.

And Ryan disappeared from social media.

For the first time in months, Maya allowed herself to think maybe the worst part was over.

Then Chloe called.

She was crying so hard Maya could barely understand her.

"They took Seth."

Maya stood up. "Who?"

"I don't know. He left my house ten minutes ago. He texted me from the corner saying a truck was following him. Then he sent this."

A screenshot arrived.

It was Seth's final message.

THEY KNOW ABOUT THE ORIGINAL LEDGER.

Maya stared at the words.

"What original ledger?"

Chloe sucked in a breath.

"Seth said the copies he gave you weren't complete. His dad kept one book with every payment, every name, everything."

"Where?"

"Seth never told me."

Then Maya's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photo appeared.

Seth sat in the back seat of a vehicle, eyes wide, a strip of silver tape across his mouth.

The message below said:
