Chapter 7 - Behind the Championship Banner

They could not legally break into the school.
Officer Bennett made that clear three times.
So she called a detective, who called a judge, who said a warrant request based on decades-old financial allegations would take time.
Time was exactly what they did not have.
At 5:30 the next morning, demolition fencing appeared around the old gym.
At 6:15, Maya stood across the street with Elena, Luis, Chloe, Seth, and Officer Bennett.
A yellow excavator idled beside the building.
"Convenient timing," Luis muttered.
Bennett looked furious. "Demolition permit says work starts at eight."
"Then why is the machine running?" Maya asked.
As if in answer, the excavator arm lifted.
"They're starting now," Seth said.
Bennett ran toward the site entrance, flashing her badge.
The foreman argued.
Maya watched the machine swing toward the west wall.
The championship banner hung inside that wall.
"We need to stop it!" Seth yelled.
Bennett shouted at the operator.
The bucket paused inches from the bricks.
For ten seconds, everyone breathed.
Then Gordon Mercer stepped out of a black SUV.
He wore no jacket, only a white dress shirt with sleeves rolled to his elbows.
"Officer Bennett," he called. "Is there a problem?"
"Work is paused pending verification of the permit conditions."
Mercer smiled. "You don't supervise construction."
"Today I supervise that machine not moving."
Maya saw his gaze slide past Bennett and land on her.
Recognition became irritation.
Then concern.
He knew why she was there.
That was the first time Maya saw him scared.
Bennett received a call.
She listened, then nodded once.
"Warrant's coming. Nobody touches the structure."
Gordon's smile disappeared.
Two hours later, detectives entered the gym.
The banner came down.
Behind it was painted cinder block.
Coach Danner had described a loose vent cover three feet above the floor. It took a detective less than a minute to find it.
Inside the wall sat a rusted metal document box.
Maya's knees almost buckled when it came out.
Her father's handwriting was on the lid.
G. TORRES - WEST GYM / MERCER
The detective opened it.
There were inspection photos, invoices, letters, and a small digital voice recorder sealed in a plastic bag.
Elena touched Maya's shoulder.
"That's his," she whispered. "Your dad carried that recorder everywhere."
The detective pressed play.
Static filled the air.
Then Gabriel Torres's voice came through, older than Maya remembered and more alive than she was prepared for.
"This is Gabriel Torres. June fourteenth. Meeting with Gordon Mercer regarding the west gym steel certification."
A second voice answered.
Gordon Mercer.
"You sign the paper, Gabriel, and everyone goes home happy."
Gabriel said, "And if I don't?"
There was a pause.
May you like
Then Mercer laughed softly.
"Then I guess we find out how expensive principles can get."
