Chapter 2 - The Video on Chloe's Phone

Principal Hargrove did not ask why Ryan had thrown the ball.

He did not ask why Coach Danner had watched Ryan crush Maya's bottle.

He asked Maya why she had "used a martial arts technique against another student."

"Because he came at me," Maya said.

Her mother sat beside her, still wearing navy scrubs from the hospital. Elena Torres had left a twelve-hour shift to get there. She looked exhausted enough to collapse, but her voice was steady.

"My daughter defended herself."

Coach Danner folded his arms. "Ryan says he tripped."

Maya almost laughed.

Principal Hargrove glanced at the incident form. "There are conflicting statements."

"There are twenty witnesses," Elena said.

"Teenagers exaggerate."

The office door opened.

Chloe Reed stepped in.

She was small, nervous, and normally avoided attention like it was contagious. Today her face was pale, but she held her phone in both hands.

"I recorded it," she said.

Principal Hargrove's expression tightened.

Coach Danner turned sharply. "You recorded students without permission?"

Chloe flinched.

Maya stood. "Don't do that. Don't make her the problem."

Hargrove held out his hand. "Let me see the video."

Chloe hesitated.

"You can send it," Elena said gently. "Keep your phone."

Chloe nodded and transferred the file.

The video was only forty-three seconds long.

It showed the ball hitting Maya.

Ryan laughing.

Coach Danner watching.

Ryan crushing the bottle.

Ryan grabbing Maya's backpack.

Ryan charging.

Maya defending herself.

When it ended, no one spoke.

Principal Hargrove rubbed his jaw.

"This complicates things."

Elena stared at him. "No. It simplifies them."

Ryan's father arrived fifteen minutes later.

Gordon Mercer filled the doorway in a tailored gray suit. He did not greet Maya or her mother. He went straight to Hargrove's desk.

"My son has a bruised hip," he said. "If this school allows students to attack athletes, we have a serious liability problem."

"Your son attacked her first," Elena replied.

Gordon looked at her as if noticing furniture.

"And you are?"

"The woman whose child your son has been terrorizing."

His smile was thin. "That's a dramatic word."

Maya felt heat rise in her chest.

Gordon turned to Principal Hargrove. "I'll expect the proper disciplinary response."

Before leaving, he looked at Maya.

"Actions have consequences."

Maya held his gaze. "So do cover-ups."

His eyes hardened.

After he left, Hargrove announced that both students would be suspended for three days pending review.

Elena stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.

"Absolutely not."

Maya barely heard the argument that followed.

Chloe had moved beside her and was opening something on her phone.

"Maya," she whispered. "The gym video isn't the important one."

Maya looked at her.

Chloe's hands were shaking.

"I have another video. Ryan doesn't know I kept it."

"Of what?"

Chloe swallowed.

"The night Tyler Brooks got hurt."

Maya knew the name.

Everyone did.

Tyler had been the sophomore who supposedly fell down the bleachers three months earlier and transferred schools after a concussion.

Chloe pressed play.

The screen lit Maya's face.

And the first thing she saw was Coach Danner locking the gym doors from the inside.
