Chapter 11 - The Woman in Room 214

The hospital bracelet led them to a community clinic whose records had quietly been purchased by Cross Meridian Logistics. Elise obtained a lawful preservation request while Mara reviewed public admissions summaries.
One patient had been discharged against medical advice on the morning of Thomas's death: Celia Grant, treated for a fractured wrist and severe dehydration.
"Celia was there," Mara said. "But she might have been a prisoner, not an accomplice."
A nurse who remembered the case told them Celia kept asking whether a man named Thomas had survived. Someone claiming to be family collected Celia before sunrise.
Celia looked smaller than Mara remembered from Thomas's photographs. Her hands shook, but she still lifted her chin when she spoke his name. The woman had been hiding for so long that standing in a doorway felt like an act of rebellion.
"I thought he was her husband," the nurse said. "He had a badge and knew all her information."
"What name did he give?"
"Victor Hale."
Mara stared at the wall. The smug man in the cafeteria had not stumbled into her investigation. He had been present at its beginning, too.
They searched for Celia through legitimate databases, welfare checks, and old contacts until a notice surfaced: Celia's former neighbor had received a postcard from the Blue Heron Motor Lodge. No return name. Just a sketch of a bird.
At the lodge, room 214 was rented under a false surname. Mara knocked once.
A woman with gray in her dark hair opened the door two inches. A chain held it closed.
"You have your brother's eyes," Celia whispered.
Mara's voice nearly broke. "Tell me what happened to him."
Celia did not invite them in. She raised a sheet of paper covered with names and dollar amounts.
"I have the blue book," she said. "But it's not what Thomas thought."
A car door slammed in the parking lot. Celia's face drained of color.

"Don't come in," she whispered. "They put something in this room."
From inside came the unmistakable chirp of a small electronic timer.
