Chapter 14 - The Press Conference Trap

By noon the installation parade lawn was crowded with reporters, uniforms, and a backdrop bearing the Fort Avery seal. General Vale approached the microphone with the grave expression of a man rehearsing concern.
"A regrettable encounter occurred between a civilian official and an Army captain," he announced. "We are reviewing allegations of misconduct by all parties."
He never mentioned the slap. He called Mara "an individual under administrative review." Victor Hale stood to his right, his cheek unmarked, his hands folded with theatrical dignity.
Then Vale produced a short video clip. It showed Mara picking up her cap and moving toward Hale, but the first two seconds were missing. Without the initial assault, her advance looked threatening.
Major Cho reminded Mara that the public rarely received the whole story at once. An edited clip might travel faster than verified facts, but an answer made in anger could live forever. Mara rewrote her statement three times until every sentence was something she could defend under oath.
Mara watched from an office with Elise and an Army public affairs officer, Major Helen Cho.
"Can we release the full footage?" Cho asked.
"Not yet," Elise said. "It is evidence in an active investigation."
"Then he's rewriting the story in public," Mara said.
She had spent her career teaching soldiers to control the story they told themselves under pressure. She would not hand Vale her anger as his next exhibit.
She drafted one statement: I was struck while on duty. I will cooperate fully with independent investigators. I ask everyone to preserve evidence and avoid speculation.
Cho approved the wording. Within minutes it circulated widely among military families.
At the conference, a reporter asked Vale whether he had witnessed the incident. He answered, "I arrived shortly afterward."
A second reporter held up a phone. "Then why are you reflected behind the serving counter during the assault, General?"
Vale's face changed. The reporter had received Nina's recording from a confidential whistleblower channel approved by investigators.
Victor leaned toward him and whispered urgently.
Vale canceled the conference.

At the same moment, a new message appeared on Mara's encrypted work phone, originating from the missing warehouse's security system.
THE FREEZER IS EMPTY. WE MOVED THE PATIENTS.
