Chapter 16 - The Medic Who Wouldn't Disappear

The old training hospital stood behind a locked gate in the pinewoods, its windows reflecting a gray evening sky. It had been decommissioned a decade earlier and rented to a foundation controlled by Edwin Cross.
Investigators arrived with medical personnel and a warrant. Inside they found several veterans receiving legitimate rehabilitation services under dangerously irregular oversight. Staff were ordered to maintain treatment while inspectors reviewed records.
Aaron Pike sat on a narrow bed with a blanket around his shoulders. When he saw Mara's name tape, he put his head in his hands.
"Thomas told me you might come," he whispered. "I thought they had killed you too."
Aaron kept a photograph of his unit beneath the thin mattress. He pointed out each friend, remembering their jokes before remembering their injuries. He had never wanted to be a witness in a federal case. He had wanted to be a medic with enough supplies to do his job.
"I'm here," Mara said. "Tell us what you know."
Aaron had been a warehouse medic when he noticed blood-storage units disappearing from military orders. Thomas recruited him as a witness. The two planned to deliver original records to investigators, but Victor intercepted their communications.
"Thomas called me from his car," Aaron said. "He activated his dash recorder. I was supposed to retrieve it if he didn't make it."
"Where is it?"
Aaron pointed toward an old medical case beneath his bed. Its lining held a memory card sealed in wax. He had hidden it through countless searches.
Forensic staff copied the data while Mara waited in the hall. She could hear Thomas's laugh in her memory, the way he called her Lieutenant long after she earned captain. She was afraid to hear his real voice again.
The recording was damaged but playable. Rain hammered the windshield. Thomas argued with a passenger, demanding that Victor release Celia. Then a man's voice ordered him to pull over.
"Conrad," Thomas said, "you can't make all of this disappear."
A second voice answered. "I don't need to make it disappear. I only need to make you look unreliable."
Mara recognized General Vale.

And then, before the crash, a third voice came over the car's speakerphone: "We have her brother's military file. Use the sister if you have to."
It was Edwin Cross.
