Chapter 5 - The Report That Vanished

Elise drove Mara to a small operations office beyond the airfield, where an old printer hummed beside a map covered in colored pins.
"Thomas sent us a packet six days before he died," Elise said. "It was supposed to contain invoices and proof of falsified receiving records. The envelope arrived empty."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you were grieving, and because the case was classified pending a corruption inquiry. I know that sounds convenient. It also happens to be true."
Elise had worked too many cases built on a single angry accusation. She believed in corroboration even when witnesses were sympathetic. Mara admired that discipline, but today it felt almost unbearable, like being asked to measure the distance between grief and truth with a ruler.
Mara paced once, then stopped. "Who handled it?"
Elise displayed a shipping receipt. The delivery had been signed for by an office administrator named Celia Grant.
"Celia left government service two months later," Elise explained. "We found her working night shifts at a diner forty miles away. Yesterday she vanished."
"Vanished how?"
"Her apartment was cleared out. Car left behind. No bank activity."
Mara stared at the receipt. Celia's signature had an unusual looping G. It matched a handwritten note Thomas had once left in Mara's birthday card: Trust Celia with the blue book.
She reached into her bag for the wallet where she kept that card. It was gone.
"I had it this morning," she whispered.
Elise called the gate immediately and ordered a lock on the sedan that transported Mara from the MP building. While she was speaking, a secure message came through from Ruiz.
MA'AM. CAFETERIA CAMERA FILE WAS DELETED. PRIVATE BROOKS HAS SOMETHING ELSE.
Mara called Nina on a protected line. "Tell me what you have."
"I was taking a video for evidence," Nina said breathlessly. "Not the slap. The man behind Hale. He whispered something just before it happened."
"Play it."
Static rustled, followed by a low male voice: "Make sure she bends down. The card goes under the cap."
May you like
Mara closed her eyes. The warning had not been a friendly tip. It had been planted to control her next move.
Then Nina whispered, "Captain, there's someone outside my barracks door. He says he's here for my phone."
