Chapter 10 - Emma's Stolen NameEmma spread the company filing across Tessa's desk. Her name appeared beneath a digital signature she did not recognize. The contact email pointed to an account Ruth had created for “family paperwork.”

“I didn't authorize any of this,” Emma said.

Tessa referred them to an attorney experienced with identity misuse and told Emma how to preserve copies, place appropriate alerts, and dispute the filings. “One problem at a time,” she reminded them. “The guardianship matter remains urgent.”

Daniel drove Emma to the bank. They closed vulnerable access points and asked the fraud department to review several transactions. The bank couldn't tell them everything on the spot, but the representative flagged a pattern of withdrawals tied to the company's old operating account.

In the car Emma finally broke down. “I kept thinking if I was more patient with her, she'd like me. I let her hold Lily even when it made my skin crawl. I apologized for things I hadn't done.”

Daniel reached for her hand but stopped short. “Can I?”

Emma nodded. He held it gently.

“I want to fix this,” he said.

“You can't fix it with one heroic moment. I need to know you'll believe me when nothing dramatic is happening.”

“I will keep showing you.”

That evening Daniel cooked while Emma rested. It wasn't a grand gesture, just soup and toast, but he checked on her without asking her to reassure him. Lucy spent an hour holding Lily and told the baby silly stories about a brother she'd once watched through a fence at Little League practice.

Then the doorbell camera alerted them to a delivery. A courier left a padded envelope. Inside was a copy of the original company incorporation document and a handwritten note: ASK WHY MICHAEL CHANGED HIS WILL.

The document listed Michael's attorney, James Bell. Daniel called the office and learned Bell had retired after a serious illness, but his successor had retained the estate file.

A second page slipped from the envelope. It was a recent photograph of Ruth and Evelyn sitting in a restaurant booth with a third person.

Daniel knew that man immediately.

He was Martin Hale, the accountant who had handled Michael's estate—and the person Daniel trusted to manage Lily's education fund.
