Chapter 8 - A Sister at the DoorDaniel stepped aside. Lucy didn't embrace him. She looked past his shoulder first, toward the hall, as though measuring exits.

“She's safe,” Emma said from the doorway. “Come in.”
Lucy looked at Lily in the crib and covered her mouth. “I was afraid I was too late.”
They sat around the kitchen table. Lucy admitted she had sent the anonymous messages. She had recovered access to an old account once shared with Michael and saw alerts when Ruth used it again. The profile on the baby monitor was hers because she had helped Michael set up a home-security account years earlier; Ruth had reused the credentials without realizing Lucy could still receive notifications.
“Why not call us directly?” Daniel asked.
“Because every time I tried to reach you, Ruth answered or sent me a message in your name. After a while I stopped trusting the number.”
Daniel showed her the letter. Lucy recognized the handwriting on the original page. She had kept copies of Michael's concerns and had filed an earlier complaint after Ruth accessed her savings without permission.
“Did your dad know?” Emma asked.
“He knew some of it. We were trying to untangle the trust when he died.” Lucy lowered her eyes. “I should have come back sooner.”
Daniel shook his head. “She made us strangers. That's on her.”
For the first time Lucy smiled, though only a little.
They spent the afternoon reconstructing dates. Evelyn Price had once worked as a caregiver for Ruth's sister. She had no current clinical license in their state, although she continued calling herself a nurse. Lucy believed Ruth had enlisted her to make Emma look unsafe so Ruth could seek greater control over Lily.
“Why Lily?” Daniel asked.
Lucy pointed to the trust paperwork. “Michael made provisions for future grandchildren. The trust pays out certain expenses for a child, but only through an approved guardian. Your mother petitioned for control of my share years ago. She lost.”
Emma stared at Lily's tiny hand. “So this isn't just about her wanting a granddaughter.”
“Maybe it started that way,” Lucy said. “But money makes her bolder.”
Daniel's phone rang. The caller ID read COUNTY CLERK.
An emergency petition had been filed that morning, the clerk told him, requesting temporary guardianship of Lily.
